Katie Omberg

1. Who are you!? What zine/project/form of creative genius are you responsible for?

Ha, I love this question! My name's Katie Omberg and I'm responsible for Gay Kid, an auto-bio comic series about growing up gay. I've done a number of other mini-comics, but this one is my current project so it's the current favorite.

2. How does feminism relate to your work?

It's not something that I expressly talk about or engage, but it is definitely stuck in each narrative in Gay Kid. A lot of it is about me wrestling with the idea of what little girls are supposed to be, and the conflict that caused within myself and with others.

3. Who are your feminist role models?

Well, I think I may have to answer this with my fave feminist cartoonists! Allison Bechdel, duh, has to be on that list. Ariel Schrag also had a huge effect on me when I was coming to terms with being a big gay (she wrote a series of comic books throughout her high school days). In terms of family stuff, both of my parents and my mom's parents have been great examples. I'm lucky to have grown up with so much support in this way.

4. Who or what has influenced your work, and in what ways?

I try to be as honest in my work as I can, which causes some anxiety about airing my own dirty laundry, but is also very freeing. Before I started Gay Kid two years ago, I started thinking about the comics/zines that I like the most, and all of them are deeply personal, unapologetic about it, and honest. I strive to do that in my own work.

5. Answer a question you've always wanted to be asked.

I love the DC bus system.
